The Increasing Botox Trend

By Ariel Mernal

The public is well aware that having botox treatments is a simple and easy solution to make the skin appear younger. Botox injections have become commonplace in recent times for those who have facial wrinkles and lines, and would like to attain a more youthful appearance. What was once probably thought to be a procedure whose novelty might wear off one day is nowadays considered to be one that is here to stay.

There are sections in newspapers and magazines and segments on television that are dedicated to celebrities that have had botox in order to make their skin look more youthful. But the question on many people's mind is 'why is it so popular?' or 'what makes it such a sought after procedure?'

There is a very basic reason for this. Ageing skin is a big problem, and people know that botox is inexpensive and effective. The entire procedure only takes a few minutes, is cheap and does not produce any scarring that may be associated with plastic surgery. Celebrities have made botox a household name, and because of this, many more people are now choosing to undergo these treatments.

What about Botox for Men?

There is a common misconception that botox injections are sought after by women and women alone. This is far from the truth. Granted that majority of the people who undergo botox injections are women, these days' even men are undergoing these procedures. There are those in the media who have coined the term 'bro-tox'. In some areas, men are accounting for about half of the botox injections that they administer.

Trends are changing

Botox is becoming more popular all the time. In one year, 2010 to 2011, it went up from 5.4 million, to 5.7 million botox patients, so it went up 5% in that year alone. Other statistics say that it's 10% that it has been going up, year by year. This rising trend should come as no surprise. There used to be those in society that looked down upon people who have botox treatments, and it was thought to only be done by the richest people, but this is no longer the case, and it is becoming widely accepted by people of all classes and economic situations. It has now become a well recognized and widely accepted surgical procedure.

But that's not all. Many other non-cosmetic disorders can be treated by botox injections, including muscle spasticity disorders and other chronic conditions. Spastic paraparesis and cerebral palsy for adults and children, and blepharospasm are included in the other treatments that botox can be helpful for. There have been multiple reports of these treatments showing significant benefits for patients. Other applications include managing patients with migraine (multiple botox injections are given to the scalp) and excessive sweating.

We can all speculate with certainty that botox is only going to rise in acceptance in time. Research is ongoing into looking at newer applications, and the results so far are promising.
